Summer is here! The heat attracts both people and dogs to the water. Swimming together is not only cooling, it is also a fun way to socialize and exercise in the heat. But just as we put on sunscreen and check the bathing temperature, there are some things to consider to make the swim both safe and fun for the dog as well.
Not all dogs are born swimmers (but they can learn!)
Never force a dog into the water. Start in shallow water and let the dog set the pace. Feel free to use floating water toys for dogs or why not treats? Monster Freezies – freeze-dried treats with 100% meat - are tasty and they also float if you happen to drop a treat in the water. Perfect!
Feel free to go into the water yourself so the dog sees that it is not dangerous and follows you. Some dogs jump in when their owner jumps in to swim and stay close. Keep in mind that even skilled swimming dogs can get tired from an unusual activity like swimming. Keep track of how long the dog is in the water so that it does not overexert itself or get cold. Dogs can drown if they get tired or panic because they cannot get out of the water. A life jacket is recommended in deeper water or longer swims.
Watch out for algal bloom and tail water
Blue-green algae are poisonous to dogs – even small amounts can make them seriously ill. Avoid swimming if the water is cloudy, smells bad or has a green film on the surface, it may even be algal bloom that is not visible to the eye. Always check local warnings before swimming!
Cold water + a lot of swimming = risk of tail water (an inflammation in the tail root). Tail water can hurt and can last for a while, the tail becomes a bit like it is paralyzed and hangs down in an arc. This can be avoided by allowing the dog to swim only for short periods, only when it is warm in the water and that it is dried thoroughly after the swim. Just as we get tired and hungry from swimming, so do dogs.
